On March 21, 2025, ASEZ hosted a Youth Forum in the Bronx to celebrate Women’s History Month. This event united students, educators, and community leaders to inspire young people to learn, grow, and take action.
Empowering Youth Through Education and Leadership
Captain Luz Garcia, State Services Team Officer in Charge and certified instructor, spoke about leadership and the power of education. She shared her journey from joining the Air Force in 2011 while studying psychology at Lehman College, to leading over 300 Airmen during a deployment to Qatar. Captain Garcia emphasized how education shapes both personal and professional growth, encouraging students to see learning as a lifelong tool.
Dr. Karen Ellefsen, the ASEZ Club advisor at Lehman College, focused on the importance of believing in yourself. She talked about her work in early childhood education and how she supports students’ confidence through storytelling. Dr. Ellefsen said, “Words do matter and are quite powerful!” She reminded students that a nurturing environment helps everyone grow and learn from mistakes.
Professor Sarai Encarnacion Afolarin, an NYU-trained sonographer, shared her passion for community service and health. She spoke about her work in hospitals and her volunteer missions around the world, including places like Malawi and Lebanon. Professor Afolarin encouraged students to get involved in helping others locally and globally.
Honoring Women’s Contributions and Inspiring Community Action
The forum highlighted notable women’s contributions, often overlooked, to inspire a deeper respect for their impact on society. Student Aurora Ruby Whyte said, “The forum inspired me because the speakers and presentations showed that I can make a difference in my community.”
This event aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals of Partnerships for the Goals, Gender Equality, and Quality Education, encouraging young leaders to take active roles for the future.
